Forty Bandits is a two deck Forty Thieves type game. It is very similar to Forty Thieves but has some rule changes that make it a slightly easier game.
The game begins with ten tableau piles. Four cards are dealt face up to each pile. The remainder of the cards form a stock, which will be turned over one card at a time to form a waste pile. All the cards buried in the waste pile are visible, so you can see the cards that have already been discarded. This is similar to the game Cadran.
There are eight foundation piles. The object is build all the foundation piles up in suit from Ace to King to win the game.
The tableau is built down by suit. Unlike in Forty Thieves, you can move a group of cards in sequence down by suit as a unit.
There are no redeals.
As with most close variants of Forty Thieves, strategy is to empty out one or more piles and keep at least one pile empty so that you can use it as a cell to move around cards. Because of the easier rules, it is possible to win Forty Bandits considerably more often than the usual 10-20% of Forty Thieves. Scores of 40% or more are possible.
Forty Bandits is one of the 850 games in Pretty Good Solitaire.
