• | 8 piles, also known as the "Equator" (center) - storage location for one card. Only 1 card allowed in each . The card is available for play on the piles, and on the when the and are empty. At the start of the game 1 card is dealt to each pile. |
• | 24 piles, also known as the "Zodiac" (around all the other piles) - build , Aces and Kings are not consecutive. Sequences can change up or down within the same pile. Top card is available for play on the when the and are empty. Cards cannot be moved from one pile to another. Once a card is played to a pile it cannot be played anywhere except to the . At the start of the game 1 card is dealt to each pile. |

Notes
Because cards cannot be played to the until the and are empty, the game divides into two parts. In the first part, the cards from the and piles are played to the piles until all the cards are either on the or piles. If you cannot bring all the cards into play, then the game is lost. In the second part, the cards are played from the or piles to the . Only if all the cards can be played up to the without blocking can the game be won.

Zodiac is a very old game, originally appearing in Lady Adelaide Cadogan's patience books in the Nineteenth century.
