Dutchess is a one deck Canfield type game.
There are four foundation piles, these will be built up in suit from the rank of the first card dealt to the first pile, wrapping from King to Ace as necessary. When all of the cards are moved here, the game is won
There are four reserve piles. At the start of the game, three cards are dealt face up to each pile. There is no building on these piles, the top card is available for play on the foundations or tableau.
There are four tableau piles. At the start of the game one card is dealt face up to each pile. Building is down by alternate color, wrapping from Ace to King as necessary. Groups of cards may be moved if they are in sequence down by alternate color. Spaces are filled from the reserves, or by any card if the reserve is empty.
The remaining cards form a stock. The stock is turned over one card at a time to a waste pile. The top card of the waste pile is available for play on the foundations or tableau. There is one redeal.
The average player wins about 80% of the time.
