As a 2 deck game, there are eight foundation piles. They will be built up in suit from Ace to King. When all of the cards in both decks are moved to the foundations, the game is won.
Batsford has ten tableau piles. At the start of the game, one card is dealt to the first pile, two cards to the second pile, three cards to the third pile, and so on up to ten cards in the tenth pile. Only the top card of each pile is face up, as in Klondike. The tableau is built down in alternate color, also as in Klondike and Double Klondike. Groups of cards may be moved as a unit if they are in sequence down in alternate color. Spaces can only be filled with Kings or a group of cards headed by a King.
The remainder of the cards form a stock. The stock is turned over one card at a time to a waste pile. The top card of the waste pile is available for play on the foundations and tableau. There are no redeals - you only get one time through the stock pile.
With only the one time through the stock, Batsford is a hard game. However, there is one thing that makes it a bit easier. There is a single reserve pile. In this pile you can place Kings and only Kings - and you can put up to 3 Kings in the pile. Only the top King is available for play. This one reserve makes the game a bit easier, because you can store Kings there for future spaces (and also move Kings from the tableau there to turn over other cards).
The average player wins Batsford about 14% of the time. However, much better scores are possible, but they will take a great deal of work.
